I bought what the dealer said was a late 1800 to early 1900 record player. It winds and says "Lakeside" on the side. It works and I want to polish and restore it but not take away from it's value (whatever that is). I'd like help/information about it. It looks like the base of pictures I've seen that has the big cylinder cone but I can't find a place for one so I think it's just the base. (obviously I hava a lot to learn).
How can I find out more information about it? The dealer said maybe I'd want to put felt on the turntable and use furniture polish on the wood. Is that right? Any ideas about it's worth? Is there anything I need to do to preserve and take care of it?
I think I'm going to be hooked on collecting and learning about old phonographs so I'd appreciate information.
Help! I'm clueless but excited about Lakeside phonograph!

Just start by cleaning it up. A slight damp cloth, plain water. Easy, not rough.Barb wrote:I bought what the dealer said was a late 1800 to early 1900 record player. Lakeside was the trade name of machines sold by Montgomery Ward in the early 20th C. Most of them were made by Columbia. Without pictures of your machine I can't tell more.

Thank you. Is there a way to upload a picture of it? I really appreciate the info.

Posting pics is easy. See the "Upload attachment" area that appears beneath the window where you type in your message. Use the "browse" button to find the picture on your computer you want to upload, select it, and then click the "Add the file" button. Bingo you've done it.
