Re: Label Year
This is an early Viva Tonal style label, circa 1925-26, and should be electric--unless there is something different due to it being a Nippon Columbia pressing.

Re: Label Year
This is a Japanese Columbia record though....they used that style for many years after the US left it behind. RHCO was the prefix for Hollywood recordings made at Radio Recorders; this was released on US Columbia 38956 and recorded approximately June 1950.
Nippon Columbia is better known over here as Denon.

Re: Label Year
Thanks for the info, so it's not a 20s recording then. Which means I won't be playing it on my Vic III.

Re: Label Year
I found a reference to the recording session on this Kid Ory site.
Interesting that in 1950 Columbia Nippon was still using a label design from the 1925-1939 US era.

According to Wikipedia, Nipponophone, a Japanese label formed in 1910, affiliated itself with UK Columbia, and adopted the latter company's trademarks for use in Japan, in 1931. Recall that UK Columbia owned US Columbia from 1925 until 1931. What US collectors often call the "Viva-Tonal" label is nothing more than a slight redesign of the UK Columbia label of the 1920s. US Columbia dropped this label design after its sale to CBS, but UK Columbia used it after the 1931 merger with HMV and on into the 1950s. Japanese Columbia used it longer than that. Indeed, the latter still uses the "Magic Notes" logo, while US Columbia's corporate descendent trades in Japan as Sony, and EMI trades in Japan as Toshiba-EMI.
