Oh, Girls, never trust a policeman!

Post by Phono48 »

Has anyone ever heard of this tune? The chorus goes:

We plighted our affection down the airey in the rain,
He stole my giddy heart away, and gave me quite a pain,
He pinched me cheek, and when he left he pinched me watch and chain
Oh, girls, never trust a policeman!

I remember having this a a small child, but can't remember whether it was a cylinder or a record. (I was lucky, I had both) The artiste was a Miss Yolande ??. If it was a record, then I'll start trying to track a copy down, but there's no point if it's a cylinder, as I don't have a suitable machine.

For the sake of translation The "airey" is the open area in front of a house in England, below street level, which housed the servant's entrance.

I did a little searching and found some references to a cylinder release recorded by Yolande Noble.

The Italian Istituto Centrale per i Beni Sonori ed Audiovisivi has a copy of it in their collection:

A poster on the Antique Radio Forum lists it as an Edison Gold-Moulded record in this topic:

I'm curious to hear it but couldn't find a recording.

It appears this Vesta Victoria Victor recording was never issued so I'm thinking maybe the OP is remembering a cylinder version.

It looks like it was a cylinder, then. Many thanks to all who replied, it was much appreciated.
