Edison B80 Diamond Disc Adjustment?

Post by pianolist »

A friend brought his B80 to me for repair last night. The reproducer was riding far too low, too close to the record and needed to be raised so the limit pin would ride in the center of the limit loop as it should. I found zero adjustments on this machine. Since I never modify from original in a fashion that can't be undone, I finally cut a slot in a large washer of a thickness I needed to lift the reproducer; took off the B80's tone arm lift knob and put the washer on the surface the lift knob cam travels on. After it was reassembled the addition of the washer accomplished the goal of lifting the reproducer so the stylus was at the correct level but - - there must be a more elegant way of doing this?? Does anyone have any experience with these? It is my first B80 and it is so very different from any of the other Diamond Disc mechanisms I have encountered.

Thanks for any information/tips!

I don't know whether the B-80 has the same arrangement, but I had to adjust the horn height on my A-80; that involved tipping it over on its side and poking a screwdriver through a hole in the bottom to get at the adjustment screw. Then I'd have to turn it back right side up and place a disc on the turntable to check the height. It got rather tedious after a while...

On most diamond disc machines, there is a threaded ball-headed screw that supports the horn assembly; it is at the bottom of the horn and is a continuation of the place that your starting knob is placed in. Simply lower the reproducer on a stopped record, remove the grill and the adjustment is at the bottom end of the rod that the horn assembly pivots on and which holds it in the machine. Insert a nail or similar object into one of the holes in the screw in the bottom of the rod and turn it in or out to lower or raise the horn/reproducer assembly. Once you see it, it will be easy to figure out. Hope this helps if you can figure out how I have written it :-)
