Hello Everyone:
I recently purchased an Edison Cylinder "I Love You Just Like Lincoln Loved The Old Red,White and Blue" by the Peerless Quar, #2312
When I went to play it it appears to be slightly over reamed or very worn allowing it not to make a completely tight fit. Sometimes it plays fine, sometimes not.
Is there a way to swell the plaster sightly or easily correct the problem.
I really like the song. Any suggestions welcome or if someone has a copy for sale, please contact me.

Re: Over Reamed Edison Cylinder
You say that sometimes it plays o.k. Could it be that the cylinder is warped out-of-round, instead of oversize? This would be more common. If it were oversize it would simply slide on the mandrel too far and not get snug. Warped cyinders will get snug in the correct position but will "clunk" as they are played.

Re: Over Reamed Edison Cylinder
If it has been reamed such that it slips over the big end of the mandrel you might try the trick of putting a child's sock over the mandrel first. This is kind to the cylinder and adds a small amount of diameter. If it out of true, as suggested above, you can chock the cylinder roughly central on the mandrel but as mentioned thump will still be an issue.
Good luck!

Re: Over Reamed Edison Cylinder
You might try using a piece if thin cardboard as a shim...
Just cut it to fit round the mandrel. Should help stabalize your cylinder.
Use more layers if you need to get a tight fit.

I 2nd what Dave says:
Try some paper or thin cardboard shims.
Lots of games can be played by wrapping various
thin things around the mandrel like even sometimes a piece of paper such as letter stationary is enough to do the trick.
Or, if the record is off-center and wobbling
around and clunking, find the place where the gap is and cut a piece of thin stuff (as in artist's bristol-board) maybe about half to three-quarters of an inch wide and push in
there then work the record a bit until it fits
right. Some times it helps to curve the
cardboard piece a little bit by hand before
using it.
It's a bit of work, but some seriously messed
up cylinders can be made to play this way.

Re: Over Reamed Edison Cylinder
Here's another simple fix you could try if your cylinder is over reamed. Line the inside of the end or ends with masking tape. This would not be good for warped ones.
