A couple of snappy tunes on Victor black label acoustic disc. very clean I think recorded via microphone using Audacity no effects from my Victor VV X1a just finished replacing flange on the Exhibition reproducer the reproducer was rebuilt a short time ago by me but I just got around to replacing flange nice improvement in sound about as new as new can be I guess

Sounds nice, Dwight -- thanks! A few weeks ago I pulled a copy of the Trio's Hortense out of a box I had stashed in a closet. I love this little number. It's just so relentlessly...cute! And the shout-out to Jingle Bells in the middle of it was a timely surprise.

Another nice tune I have ten more books to go through from the same buy and may find more All star trio records! fingers crossed I find it amazing that I find groups and band etc. that I never heard of that quickly becoming my favorites! I will be looking for more records by these guys

I have one or two dd out of the 15 I Have that sound that good but I am talking about pulling 78's out of one my books relatively as is uncleaned yet consistently having little surface noise one after another my luck or the nature of the beast? not sure but a lot of my 78's in my collection sound like this good 9/10 of them or better 10/10 and that is playing them with a medium steel needle not a diamond maybe as I get more DD my opinion will change. I try to be fussy with my 78 picking looking for ones still in sleeves or books and avoid the milk crate lumps I have yet to find a DD in a thrift store.

Dwight, as an All Star Trio fan, I think you'll be glad to know that you may be running across these guys (or some of them) on Edison discs as the Green Bros. Novelty Band.

As for comparisons of sound quality, I'm probably the least qualified guy on the Forum to comment on that, since I've just got my machine and have yet to hear a record played properly on it. Might make an interesting thread of it's own -- I'd like to know what others on the board think. What little I can say, though, is that while there seems to be a certain amount of surface noise on the Edison discs I've tried to play, that probably has something to do -- as always -- with the condition of the record and the reproducer; but I'm really looking forward to hearing these discs properly, because they do seem to give an exceptionally full and rich tone.

The paper-label DD's are supposedly quieter.


My limited experience with the paper-label variety supports this theory... the majority of my DD library are black/etched label.

It is my opinion that the average acoustic Victor record has MUCH less surface noise than a black/etched label DD.

It's a pity that so many of the earlier 'transfer' DDs have not survived in good condition: they were often miles ahead of 78s in sound quality.
