stylus not quite reaching ends of some ex cond cylinders

Post by djoutrage »

hi folks,
this is very much a newby question, but
I have an edison fireside phonograph and mod. c reproducer.
On some excelent, moldless unwarped cylinders the stylus isn't reaching the ends, the music stops and starts each revolution and the horn reproducer etc feel much heavier when i bring them back again as when they started out.
on a couple it doesn't get to the middle of the record, and it isn't happening at exactly the same place on each play of the record.
I hope this makes sense...
the horn is fitted correctly, however i've noticed the 2/4 min gear isn't as secure as it once was. I know it is still all the way in though.
this doesn't happen with al cylinders by the way.
Anyone have a clue what I'm talking about?
thanks for any help/advice,
Rob

Hi Rob,
I am trying to understand what you are saying. Do you mean that the reproducer won't play all the way to the end of the cylinder or that it is skipping off the surface of the cylinder as it rotates??

I've explained this pretty badly i'm sure..

It isn't quite reaching the end of the cylinder, it doesn't repeat parts often, it just stops and starts.
I can record it doing this, though i don't have a camera and being blind wouldn't know how to work one if i did!
thanks for your reply.

Do you mean that the carriage and reproducer momentarily stops moving to the right, while the cylinder is still turning? If so, the feed nut is skipping over some of the feed screw threads, either due to poor adjustment or damaged feed screw threads.

hi,
I don't think that is the problem, though it could be. How would I go about adjusting those screws?
what I think is happening, in newby terms is the stylus stops being able to quite hit the cylinder. However even if i start the cylinder near to the end rather than at the start it still happens, in near enough the same place each time but not exactly.
Any advice re: feed screws will be appreciated and I can hopefully stop this happening, or at least make it happen less.
sorry for vague descriptions folks!

Can you post a picture of your fireside? Front, back, and sides?

What type of horn are you using? Cygnet?

If cygnet, which carriage style do you have (reproducer on a horizontal plane or angles towards the front) and how is it connected to the horn?

Thanks,

hi,
I'll have to get a sighted person to have a decent look but I think the horn is a signit horn. The reproducer seems to go out towards the front.
I'll try and take some pictures of the entire machine as soon as i can, however i bought it off ebay and if the pics still work, here they are.

thanks again,

Since you are blind....you may want to try having another UK collector drop over to help you. Fine tuning or ?? will require some type of sight. We have many great UK collectors on our forum. Maybe one has already PM'ed you.

Does the machine play ok without the horn hooked up? Also, from the ebay pics, it looks like your crane doesn't extend far out enough for the size horn you have resulting in pressure on the reproducer.

that's a good point you make, as the horn does sometimes feel very heavy..
I am conciddering getting a smaller horn anyhow, so could that actually help with this too? or would a crane replacement be a better idea?
I'll try taking the horn off and seeing if it still does this.

@gramophone who's name i read as someone else's! if another collector could help out that would be great, though i live in a reasonably remote bit of yorkshire and I'm not sure who could get here.
