Hawthorn-Sheble flower horn

Have this horn on a newly acquired later Zonophone disc machine (not travelling arm). I was wondering what the strange attachment was. It struck me that this could be a cylinder horn converted to a disc phonograph horn. At the thinner elbow end it is not possible to tell whether it has been cut down. Horn was originally wood grained

Does the construction by the label look familiar as the attachment for a phonograph crane?

Yes, it appears to be a crane bracket that looks identical to the one on my H&S cylinder horn.

Looks like the cleat for the crane attachment on my black & brass, silk-jacketed H&S cylinder horn.

As others have noted, it is the Hawthorne & Sheble hanger for a cylinder machine horn. But don't despair - - there are known instances of manufacturers supplying cylinder machine horns as original equipment on disc machines. The Englewood Musicalphone used such an arrangement as seen on page 135 of the Talking Machine Compendium. And there was definitely an arrangement between Hawthorne & Sheble and Zonophone as evidenced by the H&S "Silk Finish" horn with a Zonophone marking (on a characteristic H&S paper label) as seen on page 165 of the same book.

Your horn is a late H&S model (U.S. Patent No.38,478) and may very well be the original equipment on the Zonophone.

Thanks for all your help. I decided to make a decision what to do with the horn today, particularly as it did not look very presentable! Maybe a repaint.....As you see in the first photo, as well as this one, the horn - as I thought when I bought it - is quite oxidized and in many places seemingly down to plain metal!

Kind of strange that you can notice things on a photo that you may not see "live".

In the first photo I posted I noticed that there was some wood grained style paintwork, so I decided to check with a bit of polish how much paintwork was still present.

Wow, what a difference. If the whole horn looks this good I would not repaint for sure.

I was cringing when I read your post about repainting, but the "after" photo of the polish results made my day. Congratulations - - that's a nice horn, and wearing the uncommon grain-painted finish!
