Most of the fittings appear to me to be of Paillard origin, including the "Apollo" soundbox. "Apollo" was the brand name of Craies and Stavridi, London, who had close links with Paillard.

Paillard did supply components to US makers, notably Sonora, but in my opinion your Vindex is a European machine.

It doesn't look particularly American to me. The Royal Navy commissioned the HMS VINDEX in 1915, the name might have been in the air.

Thanks each - that seems to make sense now - a bit of lazy thinking and expression on my part I guess, simply that it's an unfamiliar name and the only reference I could find was related to the American trade name under which phonographs/gramophones (amongst other products) were apparently made.

It seems to me a fairly unusual find - an "off make" with some attention to the sound path and which actually sounds much better than expected.
