I think you might learn something slightly earlier in life than I did: while there are real bargains out there, some machines go cheap for good reason, so buy with extreme care. "Wrong" machines are worthless historically, and some can be quite expensive to put "right". Common things are cheaper to put right, but then they are cheaper to buy "right" in the first place, so it can still be false economy. For example, look at the cost of spare parts for common HMV portable on eBay; a complete machine could be had for one-tenth the cost of the sum total of spare parts.

There is no harm in having one or two "wrong" machines for regular use or taking out to places, but my advice would be: do not fill your collection with them.

In my opinion, there is less problem with "upgrades" that a user contemporaneous with the machine's sale date could have been expected to make, but even then, there is more joy and authenticity in a good example of a machine "as originally sold".

This is partly a case of "do as I say, not as I do" advice, so I should probably keep my mouth shut!

I think I paid the upper end for this machine however I'm not overly bothered!, it would be nice to have one all original however, I know this machine was being used long after 1899 because it has the name Of a later owner aling with their address and the date of 1945, so this is more than likely an upgrade from when the q type 2 came out not a mis-match

I'd get the correct key for your Q, but I wouldn't worry about the slightly later reproducer, as it was a significant improvement over the Q reproducer and might well have been updated that way by the original owner. (By the way, the early Q was originally sold with a reproducer made specifically for it, so don't waste your money buying an Eagle-type reproducer.) Your Q, equipped with its present reproducer, will work well to play brown wax cylinders - as well as the moulded variety of course.

I was wondering if it may be best to get the original type of reproducer for this because on the reproducer I've got Im not sure how well the stylus rides the groove, the q reproducer normally seems to tilt at a angle to ride with the groove however on this reproducer the stylus seems to stand upright on the groove and possibly ride against it, I'm not too clued up on Columbia machines and reproducers however, will the reproducer I have ride with the groove fine and not against it?, was this one sold with the type 2 Q?

Yes, your present reproducer was sold with the second model Q.

George P Is Correct I purchased a Columbia Q Repoducer orignal in Orignal Box with the Orignal Key for My Columbia Q Languagephone.
the man purchased machine and well sold the machine years ago but had the key and repoducer is like brand new but orignal pics orignal repoducer & Key for my machine Columbia Q look it has the pat. dates..

Thank You George I knew I had the later one My total invest ment was $230.00 for the Columbia languagephone. I purchased at auction auction Repoducer with orignal Box and Orignal key like new hardly ever used $210.00 O' yes the Columbia Q and estate find $20 for the columbia I also for got to add I have a series missing a fe #'s But How to Speak Itilian course. All Orignal; Black wax 2 min like new 2 few have chips. I do not play those I do not want to ruin my sapphire.
