Thanks for the responses to this question...There isn't any sign of refinishing or repairs to the lid...someone suggested that a craftsman could plug and refinish the screw holes with such skill that they couldn't be seen , and I agree , but it seems that such a craftsman would plug and reuse the old holes....and it seems that the hinge is a little loose now..It's a mystery ..it's broken spring isn't a mystery..that's a pain in the butt.....Steve P
