That will mean that the US viewers won't see this. What a pity. It's still viewable at my end. Given that this was recorded in June 1927, I'd have thought copyright would long since have run out!?

After the comments on the two videos I went back and listened again and I can now hear what you mean! On the uploads, the Senior gives a more balanced reproduction. It also brings out what is for me the strength of the Senior - a lovely subtle synthesis of all the elements in the music - a magic blend. The EMG - for me - brings out the beauty of each individual instrument more than the "connection" between them. I'm not trying to suggest that the Expert can't bring out the individual gifts, or that the EMG is unable to allow the "mix" of the music to take shape - it's just that one aspect of the performance is slightly more emphasised with each reproduction.
Anyhow I also could hear why someone could find some of the notes from the Oversize horn strident, so I re-recorded the EMGCR again. This time I've located the camera as near to where I usually hear it from as possible. This all takes so much time that I haven't listened to it myself on youtube yet. We'll all hear it together!
Apologies to the Americans. I'd like you to hear all this as well.

Wonderful to hear these and I can appreciate all the comments on the differences. As has been said though, the recorded sound can bear little real witness to the experience of hearing them in the flesh!
I have some experience of studio recording and miking techniques, and know that very small changes in mic placement can often make big differences - far bigger than is apparent by putting one's ears in the same positions, since psychoacoustics play a large part in hearing anything "live", effecting a kind of coherence of the sound in various ways - but that phenomenon doesn't occur the same when hearing recorded sound. I hope to get going making videos for Youtube myself when I can get the right video camera into which I can feed high quality sound from a serious microphone and valve preamp (or unite video and soundtrack on the computer afterwards). I can already antipate suprised comments on mic placements - they may well be quite different to how & where one normally listens to these machines!

That will be worth waiting for! There is a big difference between what ends up on youtube through this camera and its owner and the reality in the room.

I am in the US and can see all 3 videos.
Sound recording copyright is very different in the US than the rest of the world. There are other discussions on this on the boards, but suffice it to say that virtually all sound recordings are prtected by state laws in the USA until 2067!

To some extent there are ways around that blocking, like getting a VPN service that allows you to essentially tell the internet what country you are in. For example, if you are blocked out of the UK, you can in two seconds change to a US, Canada, or other IP address. I have one. It costs about $6 per month.
Of course if something is blocked everywhere for copyright reasons, that does not help.

Both sound excellent. I guess my preference for this particular recording would be the Senior but there are so filters between you, sitting in the room and those of us in cyberspace.
- Individual hearing sensitivities
- horn size as mentioned
- positioning of the machines in the room
- filtering caused by variations in quality of the speakers on our computers
Also, if you could equalize all of the above, it could very well be that a particular record sounds better on one than the other.
I guess the only practical solution is to own both machines.

Have to say it's good to know that several people have enjoyed listening to these sounds that I get so much out of myself, even if it has lost so much between room and forum.
Kirtley, if you're able to manage what you say for the benefit of any Canadian people, it would be nice.
