As for the solid brass mandrel, I found this information on the Phono-L message board. Someone else was asking the same question regarding mandrel variations a few years ago and the following was written in a response:

This solid mandrel information may not be accurate judging by the last comment in the response. I must have missed the part about the information possibly being only 50% correct!
Thanks for the source, Jeff. Like Rene, I've never seen nor heard of a solid brass Edison mandrel, although I've only been collecting for 45 years!

That mandrel is legit. I once had a suitcase home that had a brass mandrel.
By the way, guys, Edison said all mandrels were brass. Just that they plated them with nickel.
I've seen later standard mandrels where plating was worn down to the brasss.
Thanks for those pics.

I am attaching a couple of pictures of my Edison Home with a brass mandrel. The close ups show thw square corners on the mandrel and the large end with no holes. Hope this helps show the difference.

Rich,
Looks like you need to find yourself a nice early Home that happens to have a newer style nickel mandrel on it!

Brass mandrels do not have any holes in the ends, but are not solid either.

I have a nice Home Suitcase machine that I am thinking of switching mandrels. The Suitcase serial number is in the 7300 range which would be correct for the brass mandrel.

Another Home Suitcase with a brass mandrel. Nice one if I say so myself.
