Hmm, so that machine was bought in Chicago over 100 years ago and ended up in a podunk town in Oregon. Amazing.

Not necessarily bought in Chicago. To quote the Messrs. Fabrizio & Paul's excellent Antique Phonograph Advertising: an Illustrated History, page 80: "Lyon & Healy of Chicago was one of the foremost sellers and distributors of talking machines in the Midwest."
