I think you are all missing the point.
The real definition of a "winner" of an auction (particularly an eBay auction) is a person who feels that the item is worth more money than does anyone else in the world who is participating in that auction.
Whether you snipe, proxy bid, or anything else, you are basically paying more than anyone else for the item. Some of you describe this as "winning." Others may not agree.
I understand that at a local farm auction, there may not be any participants who may recognize the value of a particular item. But that's definitely not the case for eBay. Just ask any dealer who is selling on eBay. You may notice that they keep selling, even after selling you that item at your perceived "great deal/steal."
