Hi
No divorce paper,s my girl loves them too, she just bought herself a Pathé Menestral cylinder machine.
The leather handle is on the box, but the centre 3 inches is gone. I don't mind, that will stop me picking it up by the handle, I would be worryed it would come open.
I knew the William Cody record was rare, didn't know how many were known to be out there.
Regards Marcel

Well said Marcel. I never pick mine up by it's handle. If it gave way.....what a disaster that would be...saxymojo wrote:Hi

Marcel, can you tell me where you found your amazing Spanish HMV Monarch? Have you any idea what model it is or how rare it is? Is the horn paint all original?

Steve

While not being an avid disc machine collector, I would happily include each and every one of these machine in my collection. Love them!
I may have missed in the discussion, were these obtained at auction or private party?
Congrats!

HI Steve
Is this the machine you refer too, It came from Barcelona. I have never seen another, but there may be many in Barcelona. I don't have any model information, never really got around to looking for it. The great thing with this machine, it is all original, even the horn.
Scott
I picked the machines up from three different collectors, it's been a very busy month.

Re: Latest editions to my collection
Yes, Marcel, that's the baby! It is in amazing original condition. I presume that pedestal came with it. If so, it appears to be of German manufacture and might support my theory that Spanish HMV's are the most culturally diverse of any from the Victor/G & T stable. I think the horns were made in France by the company who made Pathé horns (Pathé?) whilst the cabinets come from Germany and the 'parts' come from the USA!
I believe the French division of G & T was responsible for the Spanish market. As for rarity, it is hard to say. I know of 5 of these bases now including yours and they are ALL DIFFERENT! I should point out that I have never seen an example in the flesh, only on the internet. Not one of them is identical to any of the others. Why, I don't know.
Is your horn yellow on the inside (not on view in that photo)?
I have recently bought a Spanish HMV and I'm trying to piece the history of these oddities together. My example has a serial numbered BRASS back-bracket and a tone-arm with the trademark dog and gramophone etched into it with the inscription "His Master's Voice" underneath. Has anyone ever seen that on any Victor / G & T / HMV machine before? I certainly haven't.
Sadly the horn on my example needs to be repainted due to the original paint flaking off. They used a "flat" water-based paint without primer to create a natural leaf effect. 100 years and a hostile climate weren't kind to it!

Hi Steve
Yes the horn is yellow on the inside, the cabinet did come with the machine and looks to be original. My back bracket is steel and I don't have any logo on my tone arm.
I would like to see photos of these other machines.

Hi Marcel
Well, I can now tell you that you have a "New Style 7" from 1906-9. It sold for 275 Pesates originally. What's it worth today? 6000 Euros, maybe?
I will add photos of my machine when it has all been re-assembled.

The brake and the speed regulator are usually seen on earlier cases. Can we have a photo from the catalogue page?Steve wrote: Well, I can now tell you that you have a "New Style 7" from 1906-9.
PS: The crank is also an early type.
