Newest acquisition needs some help-and so do I.

I got this VV-XI. The guy was asking $35 for it but when I hot there decided he would rather just give it to me. The case is in rough shape and I'm thinking I may need to just re veneer the whole thing but I figured I'd get some expert opinions. The inside cleaned up great and it plays nicely so I want to do it justice.

Another possibility is finding another IX case in easily conservable or restorable condition as they pretty prevalent. You could swap out the parts, and work on just the case of this one as a training experiment.

I don't think you saw my other post to you, but it's good to see you back on the forum as aside from Phonogal, it's a bit estrogen challenged around here.

You are right, I didn't see your note. I had some surgery and one thing led to another and I've been out of the scene for a bit but I am well now so I am back at it. I am glad to be back.

That old veneer can really come in handy, as it's thicker than the modern stuff. I have a plastic bin full of odd pieces of old veneer that came off phonograph and record cabinets, as well as some junk Victrola cabinets that I've kept just to salvage the veneer (and other pieces). Finding that piece in your trunk, as well as having the piece on the back of your IX to re-use is great. Good luck!

I think George gave really good advice about using this machine as a learning tool about veneer replacement and repair. It's much better to learn and possibly make mistakes on a VV-IX and not on a XVIII. Jerry

According to OP's first post, it's a XI, not a IX.

No it is an IX. The error is simply the result of fat fingers,small phone, and a lack of proof reading .

Another nice facet to this machine is that it is one of Victor's nicest table-models. I prefer these later models with the feet.

The first Victrola I ever experienced was a 1915 VV-IX that my folks brought home from an estate sale when I was about four years old... over 40 years ago...

We still have it around !

Must have been tough dealing with surgery and a little one at home, but I'm glad to hear you are doing well enough to be both back on the forum and collecting again!
