By golly, John, you're right! Amberola, he means the lamp stem itself. Here's an original ad from the January 1921 "Talking Machine World" that shows the lamp stem as it should be.

I want a Modernola so bad. I passed on one at an auction a few years back and should have gotten it. It had the asian paint theme. These machines are much larger than they appear in photos too.
