Thanks guys for all the information!! Great!!I've looked over the machine closely / there are no marks or screwholes whatsoever on it / or underneath or between the lid and the body. So it must have been an on-the-table crane.

I'd love to get one / anyone know where I could buy a reproduction (I take it chances of finding an original one are pretty slim)?
Also I'm in Sweden / but things can be shipped!

These (Hawthorne & Sheble cranes - particularly the common No.5.) are they to be found today - or reproductions?

The Hawthorne & Sheble No.5 cranes turn up with regularity everywhere. Unfortunately, many collectors and even more dealers are either unaware of what the cranes should look like, or perhaps don't care. Below is a photo of a couple of Hawthorne & Sheble No.5 cranes. Click on the photo to view close up. The cranes are the same, although the base on the left is early production while the base on the right is later production. You can see more detail on the right. An article on Hawthorne & Sheble cranes appeared in the September 2010 issue of The Sound Box.

Just a few days ago I noticed an excellent reproduction of a Tea Tray No.228 for sale on eBay by ladenjus (JAS Antiques). For $99 you can't go wrong (no, I am not a paid spokesperson!).
