Good Luck! I hope you're as happy as I am with the results. Incidentally, I've used Goo-Gone on a couple of my vinyl albums, in the most extreme cases of strange sticky crud that was on them, followed by a thorough washing with my home brew record washing solution.

On a side note, I have no idea how these products might harm different varnishes or shellac, so be carefull.

Mid fifties, here. I just feel like I'm ninety!

Generally being interested in full sized machines I had not really investigated the HMV 101 machines till I ran across a number of them on ebay from england. I must say at rather high prices to my pocket book. Still it peaked my interest due to its reputation for fine sound for a portable. I too have a portable with what I would consider to be pretty great sound for a pretty small portable. I had ask about it here before and not many seemed to know anything much about a Telefunken Portable. I see now that it shares many of the same designs as the 101.. Basically the tone arm looks to be just about the same, large reproducer as well. The cabinet has much of the same designs in it as the 101. The operating levers are different an the horn opening is wider on the telefunken, which may be an advantage? What I am really interested to know is how well does the spring do in playing a 12 inch record. Mine has never managed to get though a 12" side unless it ends pretty quickly.. The spring in mine has a sort of squeaking noise which seems as if it might be a warning that your about to wind it fully? I wondered if the 101 share that? Not sure how to get mine to make it though a longer side. I have oiled it and it doesn't seem that the existing spring could run any longer than it does.. Still the two share a great deal of design and I wonder how they are related?

I can't answer how they're related, but I can say that when wound completely (until it can't be wound anymore) mine is sluggish, when wound enough to get through a single 10" it performs well, but doesn't have power to last much longer than 1 side of a 10" record. Can you take a picture of the motor on yours?

I would have to take it apart to do the motor and that will have to wait till tomorrow probably. I know the motor board is not as thick as yours. Interesting about the length of play time though. I sort have wondered if they were simply designed to play 10 inch records? I just had a record on it as I answered this an it was wound pretty tight an by the time it ended on the 10 inch side it was loosing it..
