My limited experience with the paper-label variety supports this theory... the majority of my DD library are black/etched label.

Old Man E knew what he was doing sometimes, and sometimes he was a shyster. Those late war DD's are despicable.


It's a pity that so many of the earlier 'transfer' DDs have not survived in good condition: they were often miles ahead of 78s in sound quality.

It's funny that the 2 DD that I have the best sounding ones area an early pressed label and a paper label I do have to say when they sound good they sound awesome but they just don't seem seem to have the consistent quiet background Even in youtube videos the DD have alot of hiss could be that 78's I have have lived a better life but even my early single sided discs sound quieter for the most part. Like it was said the more pristine the record the better it sounds. I do like both I just need to get more DD for comparison.
