Thank you, gentlemen! I didn't mean to hijack this thread... :)

I remember 40 years ago yesterday when I turned 20. My folks had asked me what I wanted for my birthday, and I really didn't have any good ideas. At the time I had thought something like, "Boy - birthdays sure aren't what they used to be!"

Yesterday, Barb and I drove around to several guitar shops "in search" of a model that hasn't been made in a couple of years. The sky was blue and the temperature was about 50 (a huge improvement over the past few weeks here in western New York state!). The sunroof was open and I was having a great time. Both kids called on the cell phone during the course of the afternoon. The upshot was that we eventually found the guitar I "wanted" - - brand new in the box and for a bargain price. But after playing it, I put it back. Barb was puzzled, and encouraged me to buy it. But it was my birthday after all... We hopped back in the car and drove off in the sunshine to a shop 30 miles away. We didn't buy anything there either, but I still got everything I wanted for my birthday. :)

Best to all,
George P.

Happy birthday George, and my very best wishes.

May I point out that Edison's first patent containing the phonograph, Canadian patent 8026, was granted on 17 October 1877. See my article in The Antique Phonograph, December 2012, p. 3-6. Edison described and pictured three different phonograph models for which I coined the designation "indented edge", "dried ink" and "bent wire" phonograph.

In the patent of February 1878 Edison protected his improved model, the "tinfoil" phonograph.

I know we are going off but his mention of a great birthday reminded me of one of my favorites which was my 21'st I was back packing in the mountains in NH and was on top of Mt. Lafayette above the tree line beautiful sunny June day the clouds blowing by hitting you in the face alone except for 2 other campers who were further down looking out over the scenery as hawks were riding the thermals not 20 feet from my face and feeling alive I had tea made from fresh spring water and eggs and toast the best ever. Later that night we shared a bottle of Tequila and watched the sunset It was a good day

I was encouraged to lie about my age, yesterday: I could have gotten a cat from the SPCA for $5 (instead of $80) by saying I was over 60. My 'white" hair was cited as proof of age. I still say it's extremely blond. Vanity cost me $75 - I gave my real date of birth.

Your cat loves you, no matter what your hair-color is... ;)

So happy birthday to two beloved institutions -- the phonograph and George.

I am not sure whether it is good news or not that one has become an institution. :D
