I found through a little searching this was a series of textbooks used about the time you are referencing.

I'm feeling kind of foolish about all this, but I do appreciate the help.

Smitten, you get an "A" for effort, but that's not the book. You're on the right track though - - and closer than I managed to find.

Joe, that's not the book either (I'd remember the phonograph on the cover), but the artwork on the interior pages looks very similar to the stuff I remember. The Table of Contents doesn't mention any phonograph history, so I'm afraid this isn't the one, but it's certainly of the genre.

To answer your questions, it was Geneseo Central School, Geneseo, NY, Livingston County. I don't remember who the teacher was, but I seem to recall that he was really a math teacher substituting in Music until they hired someone. (Small school...750 kids K-12.)

Why didn't I just swipe that book when I was thirteen?

I know that some school districts keep records of approved textbooks, etc., for years, so there's still hope. It's possible that there are some historical records about the school in some state or county archive; or perhaps the local or even school library.

I was going to suggest trying to get in touch with some of your fellow students, but who remembers the titles of textbooks?

I remember a couple of titles from my college days--especially those written by the professor, but that's about it. For the first 12 years of my education everything was referred to as "my (subject) book" -- "my math book," "my history book," "my civics book," "my English book," etc.; normally the expression, "where the hell did I put" preceded each title.

What Joe said is right. School districts do have lists of approved textbooks, but whether they go back 50 years, I can't say. Who knows, the textbook depository might have a few old copies of it? I know this probably isn't even close, but here's what I came up with:

Joe and Marc, thanks for your suggestions. I seriously doubt that Geneseo has any textbook depository, but I'll run over (I live 7 miles from Geneseo) and see if I can enlist the help of some kind secretary who wants to adopt a puppy...or a puppy-eyed alumnus.

I attended school in the 1933 building, and when I returned to the area in 1990, I found my office was located in the old library (the building was by then owned by the state entity for which I worked). Every now and then while walking through the halls I'd get a flashback...
