If it says "Sonata" and "Thorens" on it then it is almost certainly not an Indian Crapophone copy. The dodgy version carries the more famous "His Master's Voice" name. Thorens made this original sound-box into the 1950's and it appears on the Excelda cameraphone among other machines. As estott said, unused stocks of the same existed well past the 1960's. Even unsold cameraphones have been discovered in their original packaging!
It sounds as though you might have got one of the unused ORIGINAL specimens there.

Finally got the machine out to take photographs (of course, had to play a half dozen records on it as well...):
So, is it really a Thorens Reproducer?
(I hope)

Even though it is not original to the portable, keep it....the quality is probably better than the original.

Thank you all for the information!
Glad to know it is original.
It will stay on the player, as long as I have it.
I will probably attempt to find the correct reproducer and store it with the player, so that whoever ends up with it in the future will have all of the correct parts.
