These crates, as well as the one that started this thread, look like they were exposed to dampness for a long time, which does not bode well for their content.

How were the crates constructed? The solid sides almost look like cardboard ?

Very thin plywood, 3-ply, glued together with hide glue. It's the same stuff you often find for case bottoms and back panels. Once the glue softens with age and dampness the cheap wood shrinks and swells like crazy-- I have a delaminated case bottom and the pieces have shrunk as much as a half inch.

I haven't seen one "up close and personal" but I'm guessing plywood.

Wow- I lived in the Akron area in the 1970s/ 80s and I knew the Kratz family... Worked in retail with Janice and her elderly mom was still running the music store in the late 1970s. Very eccentric but nice people.
