This machine appears to be a British model. I wonder whether the poster lives in a Commonwealth nation?

I think you have it - there are often considerable differences between the US and the UK models

The tone arm is not the typical one found on US floor models, along with the motor board.
The cloth behind the louvers is interesting, looks a lot better than seeing right into the entire horn with the louvers open fully. The turntable and it's covering are the same as on a British portable I have here.

I second this theory... in the photo in the original post, I noticed the electrical outlets in the wall... does not look like American electrical hardware...

Also, the tan velveteen covering on the platter, with the grommet at the center does not look like American Columbias that I've seen...

Yes - I am living in one of the former dominions, now known as Commonwealth of Australia. The original reproducer has "Made in England" on it, so I would assume that the rest of it was made in England also.

The fabric must have been unique to the UK models.

To access it, you'll probably have to remove the motor and get to it from the inside of the cabinet. You might even have to remove the horn inside the cabinet. I think it will be more trouble than it's worth, as it doesn't seem to be too readily visible behind the louvers. Or, you could always remove the ripped fabric. It was never there on the US models anyway.
