It looks like it was made to play records backwards to find the "hidden" tracks...

I agree. I have never seen a Diamond Disc Reproducer rotated 180 Degrees like that. It is surely weird! I've only ever seen Amberola Machines mount it that way. Perhaps It was some type of experimental reproducer or possibly meant for an Amberola instead.

Definitely Interesting!

Spot on!

I thought that everyone knew the Menlo Road Studio, "Tom is dead" hoax.
It was at that time that some folks started having their reproducers flipped 'round to play the record backwards to hear messages from the great beyond.

Here's just one of the secret messages found on Edison records when played backward.
“A somebody was once a nobody who wanted to and did, goo goo g'joob.”

It was later debunked by Harry Houdini and as advertising gimmicks.

It was noted by the photographer’s assistant that John Burroughs, a natural with words,
often murmured "goo goo g'joob' to fill in awkward silence,
and that Thomas Edison had urged Henry Ford to jab Nikola Tesla, who turned to shouted
“Let it be!”
