Re: Shipping of cylinders by media mail

The mystery was solved today when I called the post office. The postage due was because the postal service opened the box to see what was in it, checking to see if it was indeed media mail (kind of seems BIG BROTHER (!!!) to me). The cylinders were double-boxed and the interior box originally contained speakers (subwoofers) and the postal service concluded that stereo speakers were within the box and it could not be shipped media mail. I explained that it contained recorded material from the early 1900's, and then the postage due magically disappeared!

Glad you were able to clear this up painlessly. The USPS routinely opens media mail packages because the rates are so much lower than other services it is prone to abuse. I have personally received items from ebay like shoes that the seller sent via Media Mail...

Just an FYI..

For those that Don't know..... Just about any books and All School paper items are considered Media Mail as well as DVDs and CDs, but if you try to send any type of Magazines media mail, That is a BIG NO-NO....It is because of the Advertisements in Magazines, so the U.S. Postal Service has BANNED any type of magazines from Media Mail. I have friends and relatives that work for the U.S. Postal Service.
