I have a mahogany A-80 and a BC-34. Even though the BC-34 has the stronger motor and can play a couple sides on a full wind, I actually prefer the A-80. After a good cleaning and lubrication, a new spring and some work on the belt pulleys and original belt it plays through one side without speed loss. I had to replace the cork covering on one of the belt pulleys, clean and degrease the others and I soaked the original stitched belt in denatured alcohol over night to shrink it a bit. Yes, I agree that it is a bit ridiculous to wind 50 times for one side. But I find these earlier machines that were not perfect much more interesting than later machines that just worked.
