My Mom's in her 80's now and awhile back I was in an antique store with her and I overheard her encouraging some woman to buy this ugly piece of Fiesta ware (which I know she hates) and when we left I asked her what that was all about, she just laughed and said "When you see someone buying crap you should encourage them, it takes the pressure off nice things"! So, there's one way of looking at it. Ha!
