Re: Victor Exhibition Reproducer
Is that #256 tap sold as 2-56? This seems the way to go as the labor to perform this operation externally gets right pricey.Victrolaboy wrote:I have a tap that is small enough for needle tumbscrews that I use all the time. It is a #256 tap and it's available on the Internet just look it up. The thumb screws that I use are from a specialty hardware store.

I see the taps are available at major internet outlets, if the tap in question is actually listed as 2-56 all I would need to do is find thumb screws somewhere.
So I guess by the time I buy a tap, postage, find the thumb screws and mess up the operation I will have invested the same amount of money as having it done externally. . . . .

Re: Victor Exhibition Reproducer
On my Exhibition, the needle screw thread is definitely a 56, but the screw diameter is more like a #1 than a #2; I can't get the 2-56 tap to start in the hole, but checking with the loupe confirms a 56. Now if your sound box's needle screw hole has been drilled out, you won't be able to tap it 1-56 (if you could even find such a tap!) but will have to step up to the next larger size (no. 2). But you cannot proceed by guesswork, as there are three considerations: drill size to tap, to clear (not needed for this application), and then finding a suitable 2-56 needle screw (assuming that works with the hole size you've now got, as retapped) . Of course, 2-56 is a common size, but the screw head is unique to this application, IOW, not to be found at the hardware store!
My advice is to have it done professionally!

Looks that way Henry, all indications point to just having it done professionally or put it back in the parts box.Henry wrote:On my Exhibition, the needle screw thread is definitely a 56, but the screw diameter is more like a #1 than a #2; I can't get the 2-56 tap to start in the hole, but checking with the loupe confirms a 56. Another reason to proceed carefully is that you should first determine what the size of the hole is. It may have been drilled too big for the original size thumbscrew.

Right you are. If you already have the necessary tools, this should be pretty straightforward. I happen to own the taps and the drill sizes to tap (and to clear) for 1-72, 2-56, 0-80, and 00-90, so it's just a matter of seeing which drill fits the hole. That's the easy part; but as the goal is to have a functioning needle screw installed, you need to ascertain what needle screws are available that will do the job, obtain same, and proceed accordingly with tapping. And oh, acquire the tap. And the tap holder. And maybe a drill and a pin vise.Dave D wrote:Another reason to proceed carefully is that you should first determine what the size of the hole is. I'd farm this one out.
