It sure seems odd that that voice-coil type speaker would be mounted without a baffle, behind the ornamental grate at the bottom. This would severely limit the power and bass response. I have a similar, yet older model (VE9-16X) with a field coil speaker and it is more baffled, and the sound it well balanced.

It's more of a pain in the hind end to change needles to be honest. I'm 6' 1" and it's kind of low for that. The radio part doesn't bother me as much as I don't really have to look at the dial to find the stations I'm looking for. The radio is ok in it, but it does like having a long wire aerial to work well. But that's pretty typical for 20's radios I think.

This machine apparently was originally fitted with the magnetic (100A) speaker, which spoke into a black painted steel horn the mouth of which filled the grille. The later machines with the (106) electrodynamic speaker were fitted with an inclined baffle-board that filled the space behind the grille and pointed up. This was necessary because the space in the cabinet was shorter than the diameter of the electrodynamic speaker used. In addition the 106 speaker used was modified, with a narrow circular surround. The speaker in this machine appears to have come out of a 106 speaker cabinet. It is not a Victor speaker.

The serial number is in the 17,000 or something like this on that 7-26 I posted the pictures of and everything was missing in the speaker compartment, so I had nothing to go by. I'm not sure what that speaker actually came out of. It works, but I really have no idea what it's supposed to look like down there. I forgot all about what all got done on this. I was pretty sick when this thing got put back together and really haven't paid much attention to it since then. There was black cloth on the inside of the grille and I didn't realize the whole speaker assembly was out of there until I got it home and took it apart. I was going to just part it out and a radio guy down in Kansas City gave me this speaker. He said it fits in those at an angle and that's about all I had to go by. The owners manual shows a speaker like this in the schematic, but of course it's just drawings and doesn't show how it actually goes into the cabinet. If any of you have pictures of one of these things, it would certainly give me something to go by. It really doesn't sound too bad, but my Brunswick is much better sounding.
