Victrola-Monkey wrote:Well folks, I called today and left a message... along with a few other machines I called on. Got a call back about a $200 Victrola. It took a minute to figure out she was calling about this Credenza 2-door machine. Bought it on the spot at asking price. $200! Says it's been in the the family forever and believes it's all original. The wood looks to be of Walnut versus Mahogany too, I think. I can't wait to pick it up to see if brass and walnut is in my Easter egg this year. Thanks to James and Earl for making it known when this item was being listed on Crsigslist. -Wayne
Congratulations !
I THINK VTM had gone to walnut in lieu of red or brown mahogany during the Orthophonic era.
With the 8-12 Orthophonic ( between a friend and I, we have four ! ), we have found variation between light walnut ( early ) and dark walnut (late ). I wouldn't be surprised if Credenzas had similar variations.
Please keep us posted !

They were still using Mahogany- my early 2 door is Mahogany, though the motor board seems to be straight grained walnut veneer

My 4-door Credenza, circa late 25 early 26, has a walnut appearance, but not all the wood is walnut. Some definitely isn't. By the time the Credenzas came along, they were using tinted lacquer for color, rather than clear finishes over stain, and that can disguise all sorts of things. There was also a period, during which mine was made, when multi-shade finishing was in vogue. You see many Credenzas with that treatment.

Will update TMF with verification of brass OSB and walnut wood by month's end. I'm going by the grain patern (serial# 1426) for my belief of being walnut. Also, my other two Credenza 2-door machines have the very clear wood grain pattern of mahogany (serial # 2636 and # 1368 on the Credenza X). Leaving at the end of this week from southeast Florida in a direct line to southeast Michigan to pick up that VE 8-60, then going west to Seatle, southern Cal, then back picking up 9 machines/cabinets from Michigan on. I will be bringing from FL and dropping off 2 cabinets in MI for a TMF member in a swap deal we made. It is this trip's first leg and possibly any 2 points along that route's shortest path, where I have room to transport a TMF members machine. Just send me a message to discuss. I need all the space in my Sprinter from MI on, that I can squeeze out of this van. I have insulated it and installed a diesel heater to make it cozy to sleep in and an efficient means of collecting around the country. Reminds me of a little tune I should write called... "Collecting around the Country Cowboy"... There's only so much coffee you can drink to stay awake. -Wayne

Wayne; After seeing your great collection in Feb., I am not sure where you are going to go with any more machines.

.Have a safe trip and thanks once again for your
hospitality when Nancy and I stopped by your place.

I did not ask the seller if their were 7 tear-dropped shaped holes in the soundbox because it was not where she was at the time, I didn't want to make her feel bad if it is brass, and either way, this is a great deal even though its located in the opposite corner of the country. Fortunately I was headed that way anyway. Thanks to all for the well wishes for my up coming journey and Bill, it was great and a pleasure seeing you and your wife. As Bill knows, I only collect what I can display in my house. I think I must use some sort of huge magical Orthophonic Shoe-Horn to accomplish that.
Aside from now having three complete and one cabinet only TWO-DOOR Credenzas, where 3 are Mahogany and this one I believe is Walnut, I would like to add what I see with the rest of my FOUR-DOOR Credenza and 8-30 type of machines in regards of wood type, below:
- All 3 of my VE 8-60s are Walnut as well as the Tooled Leather VE 8-30 and my 2 that are just empty cabinets.
- Of the 5 Credenza windups (4-door): 2 are Walnut (Ser# 21,611 and Ser# 20,123, and 3 are Mahogany (Ser# 18,424, 19252 and Ser#42,455).
- The one VV 8-30: One is Walnut (Ser# 55,544).
