Gosh, I have owned a Decca "trench" for more than ten years and never had any suspect that there was such coil inside the arm pivot. Must check if mine really has it.
To reply to previous questions, the reflecting horn of the Decca trench gives a very good sound for a portable of this size (if the soundbox is rehauled and calibrated, of course). But most of all, its arm has an excellent offset, which is very evident if seen from the top. Geometry is almost perfect, and of course this also adds to the sound. If it's considered that the renowned HMV goose neck with tapered arm has no offset at all, this is a truly amazing feature for a gramophone of that age, not even to mention that it's been deployed in a "cheap" portable unit!

Re: Decca 1A - Concealed Weight Adjustment
the original world war 1 trenchphone had quite a diferent system you could screw it down to a certain hight but it will take some fiddlin' but it works my trench would have the full brunt of the reproducer and arm and it would simply slow down to a halt by measuring aprox 1 mm above the record and screw it down it wil now play your system is just the perfection of this

Re: Decca 1A - Concealed Weight Adjustment
Okay, I will live with the "coil mistery". The central screw of the securing knob is stuck and I can't unscrew it, although I already applied some force. I don't have a real reason to disassemble the tonearm at the risk of stripping the central screw, so I'll leave it as it is and will tolerate the doubt of wether my unit has or doesn't have the weight adjustment coil.
