I wasn't shocked by the price. I have one that is about 500 lower in serial number and in better shape, so I was happy...but I do tend to track these because I like them, and the trend has definitely been in this direction.

Plus this particular seller markets extremely well, with folksy descriptions and flattering photography, although I do note his strange practice of semi-obscuring the serial numbers. He always seems to get top dollar for his stuff as a result (and I'd imagine has many people who track his offerings), so there's probably a bit of a halo effect that makes this price even higher. I think he's on here; I'm not criticizing, he's good at his business, and I know I always enjoy looking at his stuff.

Serial number tracking will help us detect the reconstituted examples such as this one more and more as time passes, but part of me doesn't really care. If it's a correct configuration using real parts and not resulting from destruction of some lesser machine, perhaps the only harm is the naggy little voice inside the perfectionist collector.

As prices rise, more folks will "re-create" items. This is a common practice in collector car world, for example.

I thought, for a 'recreation', the price was high.
