I'm currently 16 and I've decided to save up for an Amberola 1A rather than a used car. I should have enough saved by the time I'm 100.

i started when i was 12 but thats a long time ago (i'm 40 now) i totaly destroyed my first portable windup by doing all the wrong things but because of it i learned the inns and outs of phonograph repairing, what to do and more important what not to do
so guys get yourself an el-cheapo portable with exterior damage and experiment with taking the thing appart and putting it back together again
who knows maybe you are a natural! i certainly wasn't but i got there eventually!
its like mythbusters adam savage says failure is always an option!

It's great to see another generation becoming involved in the hobby guys!

It will likely be a lifetime addiction. Old phonographs just have a way of capturing you.

Look me up some day! I have a duplicate 1A - an early Lyre-grill Amberola 1A in absolutely stunning, unmolested original condition that I acquired from the original owners.

I certainly will! That is, if I ever have enough saved up for it.
