Re: WANTED: Victrola VV-XI upper right door
The lid looks like oak (note the grain), while the doors and cabinet look like mahogany. Can this be??
A build date of 1915 astonishes me! I was under the impression that the wide horn door cabinet style wasn't produced in the US until sometime later than c. 1917, and by then the medallion-style corner posts had been eliminated.

Of course Jerry. There's some pictures.Jerry B. wrote:Sohny, Is the finish on your Victrola original? If you don't know, could you post a photo of the inside of the lid. Generally the area inside the cabinet was better protected from sunlight and other damaging elements which altered the outside finish.
If you are hoping the get a replacement door that matches the finish of your machine? it will be very very difficult to find another door with the exact finish and wood grain pattern.

Yes, I think the the finish is original. I think it's mahogany covered with a fine layer of veneer. I found this Victrola cabinet in Rimouski (Quebec, Canada). The cabinet past the last winter outdoor, in the beach aside de St-Lawrence River! There was a thick layer of metal paint - yes, beige metal paint.
It may be that it the saved weather and water. I changed the metal parts that were rusty. The motor was still in excellent condition.
I stripped the metal paint, taint it and varnish it.
(Sorry for my english)
