I hadn't been thinking about buying this one, I'm trying to stay away from the off brands. Well, unless something nice and dirt cheap happens to fall into my lap!

Update, the price is down $275.

The Graduloa feature is what makes these machines so desirable. I always found the earlier models without the feature made them not so popular.

Aeolian was an interesting company, also know for player pianos and organs, including some fabulous player residential pipe organs that were installed in the mansions of the very, very rich during the gilded age. Here is one that's been restored, although its once grand setting is long gone.

That is cool and sounds quite good. Might be a neat one to have.

This machine is still available and the guy is closing up his stall at the antique mall. What is the going rate for one that has never been serviced, is missing the stylii and needle set screw? In general of course, I know there is no hard and fast pricing. It would be nice to have something to play "normal" records on.

There are some steel needle verticals - early OkeH, early Operaphone, and a few others.

Just about to amend my post but you beat me to it. Were the English Rex vertical records played with a steel needle also or sapphire stylus?

The only Rex records that I have are standard steel needle reproduction.

The US "Rex" Hill and Dale record manufactured by the The Rex Talking Machine Corporation requires a sapphire needle. The record states "Play With Rex Sapphire Needle" but I've found a Pathé needle does just as well.

The British "Rex" aka "The King of Records" was manufactured by the Chrystalate Company into the 1930s and is a standard needle-cut record requiring steel needles.
