Thanks for the additional information—Rexonola is definitely an off-brand about which I know basically only what you’ve shared with us. From your description, though, it seems they were fairly successful in Australia, and according to Google, they were still making phonographs after Edison gave it up, so they must have been doing something right.

They’re pretty much limited to Australia, though, right? Or have Rexonola phonographs popped up elsewhere?

They were exported to New Zealand in pretty large numbers I believe, and they can be found in England too. If my memory serves correctly, I think a couple people mentioned on one of the old boards that they've turned up in USA as well, but whether they were sold new there, or arrived later with immigrants I'm not sure.
They did out last Edison, with the last Rexonola rolling out the doors in 1935. The best production years were between 1924 & 1928, and during that time the bought the building next door to Thomas A Edison Inc in Kent St Sydney. The building was larger than Edison Inc's, and served as factory, warehouse & showroom.
