I'd imagine another reason for the rarity of these would be the low survival rate. Imagine having a stack of records containing 10", 12", and 14" inch shellac discs. Which one is going to be a casualty first?

Ortho Fan, you can condense that preposterously long URL here: http://tinyurl.com/

You'd need a turntable that could play 16" transcription discs, then you'd have good clearance between the tonearm support and the edge of the record.

Hi Everyone, I'm sorry for such a late post on this topic started way back in June but I only recently joined this wonderful Forum thanks to Rocky's gracious invitation to join up after finding me on YouTube. As with many of the current members of TMF I was a former member of another Board and when it suddenly disappeared I had no idea that this new TMF was being formed. So, I'm a little late in joining...(sigh)...but better late than never as they say! I'm just now trying to get caught up on all of the great historical posts since January. I noticed this particular topic started by gramophoneshane back in June about my 14 inch Deluxe Special Victor record video featured on YouTube. And I sincerely appreciate all of the member posts on it. To be honest, I really wasn't sure if there would be much (or any!) interest in it since I didn't think many people would recognize the label as being anything of interest. Anyway, as my first post to TMF I wanted to formally express my appreciation to Rocky for pointing the way for me and to all of the Forum members for providing a refreshing means to continue to get together and share our questions, interests and stories about vintage phonos and records. Feel free to stop by my channel (MusicBoxBoy) for a visit any old time. You'll always be welcome! Doug

It's going at 44-45, as seen in the video.

Here is the audio, at approx 60rpm - http://www.box.net/shared/gp6sbrtm6z

Doug,

Welcome aboard, we're very happy to have you join up. That's a wonderful rarity you have there! I've never seen one before. Now here's where I hit you up-so to speak! ;) Would you be willing/are you able to contribute a scan of the label of that wonderful Victor Deluxe to our nascent Label Gallery?

Regards,
John

Thanks for the warm welcome, John! I would be honored to post a pic of the label from my 14" Victor Deluxe Special record. Although, I must admit that since I've never posted a picture here I might need to ask for some help. I can easily get a .jpg image of it with my digital camera but if you or someone else would be so kind as to let me know how to post it I'll be pleased to! I have a number of other unusual records and labels that may be of interest to a few folks here. Being a very low profile type (I've never been to a phono show in more than twenty years of collecting!) it's wonderful to have this nice Forum to share a few odds and ends of interest that I've acquired over the years.

As far as the questions from others on the speed that I played the record in my video, I originally set my Victor 'D' for 60 revolutions and then played the record for about 30 seconds and it sounded like it was just a little fast. I adjusted the speed ever so slightly until it sounded about right to me and then shot the video. When editing the video later on I had forgotten that I decreased the speed slightly to produce what I felt was a better sounding playback. To be honest, it didn't matter to me how many revolutions the record was actually playing at after I fiddled a little with the speed. My only interest was that the viewers could see and listen to the record playing at what I felt sounded about right. A couple of my music box videos sound like they're playing a little too fast now that I review a few of them so maybe my hearing is a little off (insert big smile)!

Thanks again, John, and everyone for the warm and gracious welcome!

Doug

Fast or slow, I certainly enjoyed the video, and appreciated the chance to see something I didn't know existed.
Even if it is a little slow, it's probably not quite as slow as it looks when counting the revolutions.
I dont know why it happens, but sometimes I've uploaded videos, and the turntable appears to be going slower due to slight pauses in the video file, even though the audio isn't interrupted.
Some make the turntable look very jerky as it spins, & it would be impossible to accurately count revolutions.

I'll definately be one of the members looking forward to seeing some label scans & other goodies :)
You'll find posting pictures here easier than on any other forum I know of, once you get the hang of it, as there's no need for a 3rd party hosting site to upload them.
David, John, or one of the other "computer savy" members will be able to give you the best explanation on the steps to take.
