In this case the seller is clueless. Someone probably butchered the finish eons ago. What would make it worse is for a "collector" to come along, strip off the white paint, and then rather than understand what the finish SHOULD be, stain the cabinet with Min-Wax, seal its fate with a shiny coating of polyurethane or Deft liquid lazy lacquer, then take some pictures of it, and post them so that even more of tragically ill-informed population can applaud the bastardization.

The striping did really catch my eyes too, why not the whole motor plate in gold??

Now even I could do better than that after a crate of cold ones! I notice that the picture of the disks shows one with a completly white label...is this unusual?

Not at all - - the paper label has fallen off. It happens a lot, but fortunately the catalogue number is stamped into the center so the selection can be identified.
My favorite photo is the one showing the chipped veneer at the bottom of the cabinet. Wouldn't want a prospective buyer to think the machine was perfect!

The Edison phonograph was known as "the phonograph with a soul," and we all know that the soul is indestructible. Therefore, the soul of the desecrated phonograph is intact!
I'm sure that Edison would agree.

I think it's a bit to far gone for restoration. Being sawn in half is bad enough to begin with but it also has the wrong lid.
