There are different formulations of brass. Some of it is ductile and some of it is brittle. I have broken brass parts before. Grrrr! Work-hardened brass can be softened up by heating it to a dull orange with a torch and quenching it in water. I have done that many times while modifying modern gun brass to fit obscure antique calibers.
