I also own an oak Opera! Do you think the split horn can be repaired?

My oak Opera horn was split in more pieces than that & Don Gefell (sp?) did a super job on it!!

Great find. It's things like this that keep us on the hunt.

I spoke with Don Gfell, who was very kind and super knowledgable. I might send the bell down for him to assess. Trick is that depending on the type of separation in the panels, you may or many not have to refinish. Because there are so many factors, like dry wood, existing splits but also potential new ones, and the point of origin of the splits, its hard for Don to know without handling in person what kind of repair is needed. Great to hear this, because he doesn't just say 'I can fix it how you like' without truly inspecting. Thats a real pro for you. I'd prefer to leave it original finish so I'm recouping after the buy and first starting with acoustics. In the meantime I sent the reproducer to Steve Medved for a spruce up. At least it can sound great for the time being! I've only wiped down with a lightly soapy and lightly damp rag (but not on the horn, just case and works). There is a real temptation to clean further, but I'm hesitant to alter the condition beyond moving off dust and obvious grease and debris.

Over the weekend I received the reproducer back from Steve Medved. He did an outstanding and extremely thorough job. The difference is really impressive. The machine needed a new sapphire and now it sings loud and clear.
Steve did excellent, fast, and top-notch work. I would highly recommend using him. He explained his process and the attention to detail was very reassuring.

Now what 4 min records to track down for listening???
