The graduola is basically like a push bike brake cable, so you pull or push the small knob at the end of the bakelite handle. Pretty much the same as an Edison volume control, except it can be pulled out from the cabinet.

I often laugh at the fact it was removable from the cabinet. To operate the graduola from the comfort of ones arm chair, the chair would still have to be right beside the machine
It's not as though you could sit 10 or 15 feet away from the machine, so it's all a bit pointless really.
