You're correct - - a smooth-fitting tight crack shouldn't be a problem. Pits, chips, and any crack where a piece of paper can slide in should not be played.

You're right - a $75-$100 stylus isn't worth the risk unless the crack is smooth and tight. Even the cleanest, smoothest crack will "tick" when played, so the listening experience is already compromised somewhat. It all depends on how badly you want to hear the record.
