Long ago, I put many of my favorite Edison discs on cassette, using a Sony Walkman Pro and an expensive (for then) set of Sony headphones. I plugged the headphones into the Mic jack, and set the 'phones right inside the horn of my Chippendale. The large diaphragms tended to filter out surface noise, while the low velocity pick up cancelled out the huge volume from being inside the horn - which also cancelled room & background noise. I still play those tapes in the car, and they sound pretty darned good.
