They made reproductions of the berliner gramophone in the 20's-30's? Do those have value to collectors?

Re: value of berliner gramophone & records
Hello Nickolas----In my opinion, the only value would be what the person who had a reproduction model would perceive it to be for him/her. Again, it is only my opinion, but I personally put little to no value on re-makes, as a "collector or enthusiast". Michael p.s. I will be in Brooklyn this week on business. If time permits, I may stop by your museum to say hello.I trust all is going well for you.USlakeside wrote:They made reproductions of the berliner gramophone in the 20's-30's? Honestly I had hoped that his request would go unheard. He (or she) doesn't seem to be interested at all in the hobby and only wishes to squeeze out maximum dollars. We will never hear of him again when he sold out. As a non-active member he solely distorts our members list.hotrod351 wrote: i have had them myself for over 20 years but dont really have any use for them. any one know where id find information on any of its worth. thanks for any help
Therefore, why bother. What do you think?

that's pretty much what I was attempting to get at, however indirectly, in both this thread and the other concerning the "grafonola deluxe lion's head question" which also essentially amounted to a, hey, I've got this machine and I'm wondering how much it might be worth...Starkton wrote:Honestly I had hoped that his request would go unheard. the most ridiculous thing is that no matter how many times you make the suggestion, photos are never supplied.

This might be because he likely does not want us to easily recognize him later. I also have to emphasize my discomfort with such 'inquiries'. My website disclaimer does also contain a strict policy of giving no value information due to several abuses.brianu wrote:the most ridiculous thing is that no matter how many times you make the suggestion, photos are never supplied.
I remember one person that was contacting me because he wanted to sell a box of cylinders. I gave detailed information, including a very reasonable offer. From that point he never replied and shortly after an eBay auction appeared with one single record at a starting bid of a seven times higher price. I was pleased to see that he did not sell any.

Earlier this week there were pats on the back of just how great this board is. This is true. I've seen this as a non-registered daily observer. Respectful answers to questions and interesting conversation abound. That's a good reflection on an informal community such as this. This is why we bother.
The declaration of value is a touchy subject for buyers and sellers alike. Everyone wants a deal. No one wants to divulge what they actually spent unless it was a deal. Nothing personal, that's business and that business that is interwoven with collecting antiques.
It's ok to profit. It's ok to be secretive. It's ok to point the individual in the direction of self help. It's ok to try and buy. It is ok to be a saint too. You cannot blame anyone for trying to get free and easy information. If you do not wish to handout value(d) information, just disengage. A blanket disclaimer is great for a business or personal website and could not apply here. The users of this forum use it to conduct business on and off site. This instance is no distinction.
It is a bad reflection on the community when discounting banter about the requester is being made on the very same post and requires adminstrator/moderator intervention.

Re: value of berliner gramophone & records
When I had my sign business, there was a scenario that is commonplace in the industry that I always tried to avoid in which a potential client would attempt to get me to design a sign or provide them with a sketch no matter how rough, and a quote for same -- that they would promptly shop to my competition and attempt to get a better quote from MY sketch!
I semi-solved this problem by keeping sketching crude and to a bare minimum and by using paper for that purpose with the name of my shop printed lightly upon the entire surface; and by requiring an advance against any further serious work.

Michael,
I agree about the reproductions, but if its from the 20's it still is an interesting (and quite old) object. I couldnt imagine paying more than a couple hundred however.
As for a visit, I will be out most of the week! My weekend is in the middle of the week.

Re: value of berliner gramophone & records
I'm pretty sure the 20s/30s ones would be of some value to collectors.
I dont know know much about them at all, & only learned of their existance on Dan's old board.
All I can really remember is that they were apparently used in some record shops along with a Nipper dog, and I'm pretty sure that Victor made them. (maybe as a 20th, 25th or 30th anniversary promo??)
I don't imagine they were made in very large numbers, and they probably would have been good quality & authentic reproductions, so surely they'd be more collectible & of higher value than a Japanese or Australian repro from the 70's.
They'd also have more provenence than any of the later copies, so although they wouldn't be as desirable or valuable as an authentic original, you'd think they'd be second in line with collectors??
I certainly wouldn't turn my nose up at one
