Reviewing the original post, I see that shawnxu wrote that some records played okay but others stopped. I had imagined the machine slowly grinding to a halt, rather than making an abrupt stop. I think shawnxu should clarify whether the stop is gradual or sudden.
I beg your pardon, VintageTechnologies and others, right you were! I still think the ticking is likely to be the velocity trip.

If the records are stopping slowly, rather than coming to an abrupt stop, then it sounds as though the spring is in need of removal and cleaning. It would be interesting to know if this happens on later records which are much more heavily modulated, and cause more drag on the needle. A 101 with a good strong spring can easily cope with those records.

The ticking noise, however is almost certain to come from the autobrake. It appears that there are two separate issues to be addressed.
