Eric,

thanks for posting the link to the Whiteman version. It sounds great on that machine. Also interesting to hear a different version - amazing how different the same tune can sound played by different bands.

Neo - yes, i'll have a look. I wasn't sure if it was on the new board or the old new board. I only remeber I heard it somewhere. I'll check it out now.

The Edison diamond disc rendition of "Charleston" by the Golden Gate Orchestra is available at Phil O'Keefe's site:

By the way, Phil's "Edison Phonology" site is an excellent resource for Edison records.

OMG - can the bidding go any higher?!!!
I found this recording in a pile of about 25 records I bought at an antique shop a few months ago. I paid $8 for the pile - so that means I paid about 32 cents for the copy (and it is in very good condition). I don't know if $125 is too much or not, but given the significance of the song to the era, I guess $125 seems just fine to the buyer who got it. It certainly is a must have record though.

Personally I find it much more fun to stumble on to gems while rummaging through otherwise random piles of records or upon cleaning out machines that I buy. It just makes it seem more special somehow...dunno.

Walt
Sounds like you got an excellent deal there. The auction was in UK £ so converting £122 into US $ gives a grand total of $198 (approx)!! Now thats alot!

Rocky - thanks for the link I will check it out.

Just listening to the GGO version now - its amazingly different to the other versions I have heard before with there being a totally different emphasis on the rhythm. I'd forgotten how different it sounded. Thanks for the link (now saved as a favourite :D )

The Golden Gate Orchestra's rendition of "Charleston" is probably one of the slowest and longest recordings of the song. My favorite is Ben Selvin's Vocalion.

Vocalion 14686-B is very possibly the earliest recording of "Charleston." It may not show up in many searches, as it's part of a medley and is titled "Old Fashioned Love" in the On-Line Discography. This record was recorded by the Ambassadors in September 1923, one month prior to Arthur Gibbs' Victor recording of "Charleston." Most recordings of the "Charleston" were made in 1925.

Interesting that their version of the Charelston was so slow and "lazy" sounding when other songs they recorded were with a very "hot" beat. I was just listening to their version of "Manhatten" which really rocks (no pun intended!) in comparison.

Richard, I don't mind the pun at all. "Manhattan" does rock. Rocky

Walt,

You are correct. The record label says "Charleston - Medley Fox Trot." See the link below.

I have yet to even SEE a copy of this song by any band on any record, and this after 30+ years of collecting. Having said that, the price isn't $125, it's 122 British Pounds, which (I think) converts to around $300, but if I have to pay anywhere near a price like that I will happily live without ever owning this record.
