The treacle mixture doesn't harm paint either , so if you're trying to preserve whats left of an original finish its pretty damn good.

I suspect that it's the sulfur in the molasses that's doing the trick here. Possibly it forms a weak sulfuric acid in solution---any chemists out there? Please comment!

Coca Cola for a few days and rub with a ball of tin or aluminum foil. I have used this multiple times on rusty, ground dug items.

for over 40 years I have used apple cider vinegar and water
get a 5 gallon paint bucket (or the over priced homer bucket from home depot)
go to the grocery store and buy one gallon of apple cider vinegar 5% acidity
(if it says white vinegar any where on the bottle it wont work don't use it)
pour the whole gallon into the bucket and add 2 or three gallons of warm water to it
place the rusted items into the bucket and make Shure it is submerged.................
and let it set for overnight then retrieve the parts from the bucket and steel wool, scotch brite pad or small brass bristle brush the item under running water in the sink and most or all of the rust is gone if not put it back into the bucket for another day and continue to repeat until all the rust is gone.......
this is user friendly and non toxic
